‘A step by step guide to creating a beautiful, healthy lawn’
Ground Preparation
Clear the area by removing any existing turf, slicing beneath the grass with a spade or by hiring a purpose designed turf cutter.
The soil needs to be turned over thoroughly to a depth of approximately 75mm depending upon ground conditions, using a spade or a powered cultivator. Removing large stones and any buried debris.
The ground should be raked to provide a smooth level surface. If the surface soil is of poor quality or is uneven, apply some additional topsoil and even it out with a rake. A lawn requires 100mm depth of good topsoil.
Ideally the area should be consolidated by lightly rolling or treading (heeling) the surface by foot to reveal any soft patches which can then be raked level. This may be dependant upon weather conditions. This process should be continued until the whole area is evenly firm and level, but not compacted.
Apply 35grams per metre of Teal Turf general purpose fertiliser which should be raked into the topsoil prior to laying the turf.
Ordering your Turf
It is advisable to have your ground preparations completed prior to ordering your turf. Measure the area accurately in metres. Visit our measuring guide page here.
We can recommend our Sterling Lawn Seed turf for a quality lawn which is hard wearing, has good colour, easily maintained and weed free.
Turf must be laid as soon as possible following delivery, ideally on the same day within spring/summer months, or within 24 hours during the autumn/winter.
Laying the Turf
Never walk directly on the prepared soil or newly-laid turf. Use boards or planks to work from and walk on.
Begin by laying your turf on the longest straightest edge and continue with full rolls around the perimeter. Continue to work across the lawn, strip by strip, staggering the joints similar to a brickwork pattern.
You will need to ensure that edges and ends of turf are butted up tightly, but avoid overlapping.
Overlapping pieces and ends of rows should be cut off neatly. Avoid using small pieces of turf as these can dry out.
Watering
NEVER LET YOUR TURF DRY OUT! Visit our Turf After Care guide here. Water you new lawn immediately after installation using a hose and sprinkler for approximately 45 minutes. Paying particular attention to edges and corners. Check under the middle of the turf that water has percolated through the underside.
Irrigate twice a day for the first week, once a day in the second week and as necessary depending upon weather conditions in the third and following weeks.
Feeding and Maintenance
As a general rule Teal Turf fertiliser should be applied every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season. A policy of ‘little but often’ will help maintain your lawn in peak condition.
Resist the temptation to make the initial cut until your new lawn has rooted. This will be approximately 2 weeks from laying during Spring and Summer and after 3 weeks or longer in Autumn/Winter periods.
